The Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry Discussion Group of New York (NYMS) is a local scientific and educational nonprofit organization gathering spectrometrists, chromatographers, students, vendors and LC/GC/MS enthusiasts.

NYMS was informally formed in March 2024 by a small group of scientists in response to a recognized need for a local, inclusive scientific discussion forum serving the State of New York. To formalize its structure and ensure long-term sustainability, NYMS was officially incorporated in the State of New York in April 2025 (DOS ID: 7595176). In May 2026, NYMS was recognized as tax-exempt organization under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3) to further support its educational mission.

Its primary activities consist of organizing publicly accessible scientific discussions and presentations focused on mass spectrometry and chromatography. These activities include quarterly online meetings featuring lectures and presentations by students, early-career scientists, academic researchers, and industry professionals. These meetings provide a low-pressure educational environment, particularly for students and young scientists, allowing them to develop presentation skills and increase their exposure to the scientific community. In addition to online meetings, NYMS maintains this public website and publicly accessible recorded presentations available on its YouTube channel. These platforms are used to disseminate scientific knowledge, share job opportunities and upcoming events, identify laboratories across New York State to facilitate collaboration, and provide general educational resources relevant to analytical science.

Participation in NYMS activities is open to the general public and includes students, academic faculty, researchers, industry scientists, vendors, and any individual interested in analytical science. NYMS is committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive scientific community, with particular attention to students, early-career scientists, and women in Science, through accessible educational content, networking opportunities, and exposure to diverse career pathways.

NYMS is recognized by the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS) as an active local mass spectrometry discussion group and is listed among ASMS-affiliated discussion groups nationwide.

By sharing current research results, methodological advances, and real-world applications through public meetings and freely accessible educational videos, NYMS helps the general public better understand how analytical techniques contribute to addressing major scientific and societal challenges and promotes broader public engagement with science.

For students and trainees, exposure to these topics and applications helps spark scientific vocations, increases awareness of career pathways in analytical science, academia, healthcare, and industry, and provides opportunities to connect with professionals, mentors, and potential collaborators, thereby supporting long-term educational and workforce development.
